technical comment
Virtuoso flutist Philippe Bernold performs five twentieth-century masterworks of the repertoire for solo flute - works which also happen to be milestones in the music of our time: Sonatinas for flute and piano by Pierre Boulez and Henri Dutilleux (with pianist Alexandre Tharaud); 5 Incantations by André Jolivet; Le Merle noir by Olivier Messiaen, and Density 21.5 by Edgar Varèse. Bernold combines his busy international solo career with the position of first flute of the Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon, a position to which he was appointed by John Eliot Gardiner in 1983. He has also dedicated himself to teaching at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique of Lyon (taking over the flute class taught by Maxence Larrieu).
