| Founded in Paris in 1958 by Bernard Coutaz, harmonia mundi France is the world's oldest independent classical music label. From the company’s earliest years, its repertoire choices were primarily focused on music of the Baroque age and earlier. The legendary Alfred Deller began recording for harmonia mundi in 1968, followed by such luminaries as William Christie, René Jacobs, and Philippe Herreweghe. These artists, among others, contributed greatly to the renewal of authentic musical performance practice through their careful attention to the composers' original scores, consideration of historical and cultural context and the type and timbre of the instruments used. | |
In parallel with its artistic expansion, harmonia mundi was also developing commercially. The company created its own French distribution network in 1976 and, from 1982, established subsidiary offices in the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Switzerland and the USA. After its move to Arles in 1986, the company started to diversify its activities with the creation of a department for book distribution. The year 1995 saw the launch of a network of retail shops intended to compensate for the disappearance of independent record and book dealers. Today the company’s forty-six harmonia mundi boutiques in France and Spain play a key role in guaranteeing the independence of the company's editorial decisions and the expansion of the recorded repertoire. |
