This release completes the Nash Ensemble's survey of the Brahms piano quartets. The group's recording of the first and third quartets garnered broad critical acclaim. By the time Brahms wrote his Clarinet Trio in 1891, he was a very well-known composer and musician. The trio, as well as the later clarinet quintet and solo sonatas, was written for and inspired by the great clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld, much in the way Mozart wrote for Anton Stadler. Brahms’s second Piano Quartet is massive in scale. It is one of the true masterpieces of the period, rich in melodic content and complex thematic development.
