The sixth volume in Dutton's fascinating series entitled British Light Music Premieres presents nine composers in twenty-nine tuneful tracks. The music here ranges from Anthony Hodges’ bustling evocation of market day at the Yorkshire town of Beverley to John Fox’s powerful musical evocation of a lost icon of British life, his Portrait of Diana from 1997. Also featured are folk-inspired works by Welsh composers Alun Hoddinott and Mansel Thomas, Philip Lane’s tuneful and varied Lyric Dances and a potpourri of show tunes by Richard Addinsell and Noel Gay from 1926. Rounding out the disc are David Morgan’s charming Music for Children and Carey Blyton’s Cinque Port suite and El Tango Ultimo, which distils the very essence of South American dance into a few hypnotic minutes. Featured artists include the Royal Ballet Sinfonia conducted by Gavin Sutherland and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Barry Wordsworth.
