Pergolesi's composing career began at the age of twenty. However, at only twenty six, he died of tuberculosis. During his short lifetime, Pergolesi was revered in Rome and Naples. After his death, his reputation spread and eventually eclipsed that of most other composers in the second half of the eighteenth century. Pergolesi's posthumous celebrity was such a magnet in the music world that, hoping to reap large financial profits, publishers and opera directors alike attributed his name to hundreds of vocal and instrumental works by lesser composers. Of all his works, the Stabat Mater was the most celebrated and remains hugely popular to this day. This recording of the Stabat Mater features Florilegium and includes a selection of Pergolesi's choral and instrumental compositions.
