Alongside his role as the principal trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Jörgen van Rijen likes to feed his passion for period performance - on the sackbut, a precursor to the modern trombone. This makes him something of a rarity among brass players, most of whom find the two styles of playing mutually incompatible. Notes Van Rijen, "Although you need a lot of breath to play a modern trombone, you don't need much more than a sigh to make the baroque instrument play all kinds of intricate figuration." Ably assisted by Combattimento Consort Amsterdam, here he performs Baroque sonatas by Biagio Marini, Antonio Bertali and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, and Classical concertos by Johann Albrechtsberger, Georg Wagenseil and Leopold Mozart.
