This Bert Whyte recording of Leopold Stokowski conducting the Houston Symphony was made at the Houston Civic Center in 1959. Scriabin's Poem of Ecstasy is a big, one movement work in sonata form that combines the elements of a symphony and a tone poem. The work highlights Scriabin's development and exploitation of new harmonic ideas including chord structures. Coupled on this release is another Stokowski performance of Amirov's Azerbaijan Mugan. Amirov's composition, masterfully performed, exhibits the complicated system of mode scales and fixed melodic patterns characteristic of music of the East. Remastered for Classic Records by Len Horowitz and Bernie Grundman, this recording was transferred directly from the 35mm magnetic film for maximum sound quality. The set includes both a standard CD and a dual sided DAD 24/96 - HDAD 24/192 combo disc.
